If you begin this article with the hopes that it condones “hiring” your family and friends to replace professional wedding vendors, you will be sorely disappointed. Nothing replaces seasoned professionals to handle the details of your wedding day…not even saving money. Some things are just too important to skimp on, and your wedding day with all its intricacies that are involved is most definitely on that list. Take our word for it…when you leave your reception knowing it was the best day ever, you will be so thankful for having hired professionals that made sure it ended that way!
So with that out of the way, here are a few tips to consider when looking at the big picture of budget.
- Can your reception site also hold the ceremony? If so, you can easily lower some costs from the following categories: 1)Transportation…you won’t need the car and driver in the time between the ceremony and reception; 2) Floral…arrangements and decor that fill the ceremony entry, altar and aisle are now automatically a part of the reception; 3)Space Rental…any rental fee paid for a church, chapel or separate event space would be non-existent; 4)Travel Fees…any extra fees your photographer, coordinator, DJ or musicians, etc. may have to charge because of time and travel between venues.
- What is included in the cost of your reception venue? When searching out venues, make sure you get a list of what is included in the cost of the venue and then compare apples to apples. If the venue that is half the cost of others doesn’t include tables, chairs, set-up, clean-up, sound equipment and so on, remember that the rental and delivery costs of those items quickly adds up and may end up costing you more in the long run. Take into consideration what you need, how long you’ll need it and the logistics of how it will come together.
- Can the caterer help with linen and serveware? Many caterers have partnerships with linen and china companies and will often pass along any discounts to their clients. There is usually not much cost difference if you were to provide these items yourself, but the convenience factor is through the roof on this one! Instead of having to pack dirty linens and dishes back to the rental company yourself, the caterer takes care of all of that for you.
- Can you rent any decor instead of purchase? This one is HUGE! The cost savings is monumental if you can rent your decor instead of purchase it. What are you going to do with 250 votive candle holders and 40 lanterns? Even if you sell them later, you can’t recover anywhere close to what you spent, and it would still have been less expensive to rent all those things that will be of no use to you later on. The best way to get the feel for how decor rental companies can help you is to schedule a consultation with them…they can often offer you so much more than what you will find perusing their website. Oh, and just in case you wondered, our favorite company is Props-For-Hire!
And these are just a few ideas to get you started. Just think of how much fun your family and friends will have at your wedding when their only job is to celebrate with you! Happy planning!
