Let’s face it. The reception is going to be the largest spend of your wedding. Gone are the days of serving nuts, cake and punch in the church gathering hall…although there’s something enticing about the simplicity of the suggestion! Keep these thoughts in mind during your planning process if the previous suggestion wasn’t up your alley!
- Cut down the guest list. There are a few surveys out there that suggest that after several years, when couples look back at their wedding photos, they are amazed by the number of guests they couldn’t name. Inviting only those who matter to you most will not only save money, but will ensure your relaxation and enjoyment of the celebration.
- Be considerate of your guests. This is a huge celebration and you are the host, and the first rule of entertaining is that you consider the time and attention of your guests. Don’t make them wait several hours between the ceremony and reception, and if the two take place at different locations, work hard at having them close together. Two hours between the two is too long, and driving more than an hour to get from one to the other is asking too much.
- Do your reception well, no matter your budget! Do what you can afford to do and do it beautifully. When money is tight, choose a weeknight, an early weekend start time, a lesser known venue…whatever gives you the most beautiful reception within your budget. Skimping always shows, so don’t try to reach for a level above what you can afford. In the end, you’ll be happy with your decisions.
- Leave the reception before your guests. Yes, it’s a great party and you don’t want the fun to end, but you also don’t want your guests to be playing a waiting game. People really do want to see you off, so let them participate in that grand exit you’ve planned for. Remember also that there are a few family members and friends that have to pick up and clean when the party is over…help them help you!
Make your reception fun, the festivities memorable, allwith the fabulous people in your life…and no regrets!
